Directory Administrative Tools - Trouble Shooting Suggestions

Can you explain what this LDAP stuff is all about? LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. It is a standard designed to provide directory services for organizations such as the university. The directory is designed to contain information about all faculty, staff, and students at the university, so that applications can use it for a variety of purposes, such as user authentication (e.g. password checks), user authorization (e.g. is this person a member of college x?), and extraction of information about an individual (e.g. email address). A directory service is seen as a critical part of the network infrastructure as it will enable a much greater level of application and system integration. Additional information about the UMD Directory service is available at www.oit.umd.edu/middleware/directory.
What is my Directory ID and how do I discover what it is? There are several values that are unique to your record in the Directory. These include the University ID number, the Directory uid, and your email address (if you have one). The University ID number is a nine digit number that will ultimately replace your SSN in University administrative applications. The Directory uid is an alphanumeric value that was assigned based on your WAM or Glue account userid or, for first initial followed by the first 7 characters of your last name. The email address is the same as the address you have on record with the university. You may discover these values by searching for your record using your Employee/Student ID (most often this is your SSN) and PIN. To do so use the Search by UMID/PIN page.
When I try to change my password or do a search, I receive the error:
An I/O error occurred during security authorization.
Please try your connection again.

Why is this?
There is a problem using some versions of Netscape with the secure server used by the ldap web server. If you are using an older version of Netscape, we recommend that you upgrade it to Netscape version 4.7x. Netscape 4.7x is available for free, download from the Netscape client archive web site.
Neither Change Directory Password nor Search for an entry in the Directory works. What gives? There may be a temporary problem with the Directory web server. Please be patient, and try again in 10-15 minutes. If the problem persists, please contact the IT Help Desk (301.405.1500), for additional assistance.
I tried searching for myself. No matter what I try, the search results in no matches. Please help me! If you are a student your entry cannot be found without including your id and password in the login box at the bottom of the search screen. In fact, you must provide an id and password to find information on any student.
I can't log into WebCT, can you help me? Beginning in the fall 2001 semester, the login id for WebCT is your Directory id, and the password is your Directory password. Please carefully follow the instructions on the WebCT Login Page.
Note: Your Directory id is NOT your social security number, and your Directory password is NOT your Ares/Testudo PIN. Note, you may need to use your Student ID or Employee ID (often your SSN) and PIN to set your Directory password.
I successfully changed my Directory password, I still can't log into EMLS. Please help! Be sure you are using the correct id/password. If you still have problems contact the IT Help Desk (301.405.1500), for additional assistance.
